For a smooth, realistic appearance, there are numerous shading and blending methods for charcoal drawings:

  • Use a round paint brush to lightly tint some portions of the drawing. You can control the brush well and get into the finer details of your work thanks to its precise tip and soft bristles.
  •  Blending stumps can be used to shade tiny areas because of their pointed tips. You can use them to blend harsher, more defined edges because they lack the softness of a brush.
  • For big shade regions that don’t require a lot of precision, a finger wrapped in tissue works nicely. With this method, you can quickly smooth out portions of the background.
