Sketch paper is frequently made from wood pulp, is thin and affordable, and is offered in big, thick pads. Choose acid-free sketch paper if you want your drawings to last, and heavier weight paper with a minimum weight of 125 grams per square meter if you like thicker paper for your drawings (gms).

Almost any paper will work for basic practice drawings. Office printer paper is inexpensive and smooth. A higher grade of sketch paper will provide you with a finer surface to work on for sketches that have a little more detail.

The variety of tones (shades) that can be produced by smooth paper surfaces is less than that of textured surface papers. Shades are typically applied to textured paper surfaces because the roughness of the paper facilitates shading and offers a wider spectrum of tones that can be applied more evenly.
